Quest for the Perfect Backpacking Pants

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

After a very long quest for the perfect backpacking/hiking pants, I've found pant nirvana with the Palisades. They're extremely comfortable with a slim fit (unlike many hiking pants these days that look more like billowy clown pants). They have a rare combination of wind resistance while remaining breathable on a warm day. The front pockets work great with the backpack hip belt in place and the cargo pockets hold plenty yet lay flat when empty. They make a little swishy noise when walking but that's the price of a moisture/stain/tear resistant, light-weight fabric.

I like them so much I bought a 2nd pair for the future (just in case the 2015 model de-evolves in some sad way).
No regrets, no reason not to buy them!

Best Ever!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

My 5th pair of Palisade Pants - Lost weight and refreshed with all three colors. Casual Day at work to multi-day hikes, best pants ever. Dry quickly, take abuse off-trail and bush whacking, range of motion awesome. No belt and adjustable during strenuous activity. Bonus - has sizes for those of us that are inseam challenged!

How is the fit from the knee to the hip?...

How is the fit from the knee to the hip? I am looking for pants that the waist and rest of the pant actually fit a normal male and not a skinny climber.

These have an athletic fit so they will definitely be a more slim fitting than loose.

You get what you pay for!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Yes, this pant is more expensive that many others, but the quality, comfort, fit and durability are all phenomenal. I wore these on a 7 day, 55 mile trek in Canada's Kootenay NP. I carried a second pair of hiking pants with me (not Arc'T), but never needed them. These dried fast (it rained most days for a few hours), never stank, cleaned easily, and show no signs of wear & tear. On the one hot day they breathed well. The fabric has just enough stretch to make them comfortable in long climbs. The 34x32 fit is perfect. I'm getting a second pair.

The best pants I ever had

I bought these pants several years ago and so far I've used them on all my hiking and paddling tours. So far they have been at Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, Rwenzori, Swedish and Norwegian mountains and the archipelago of Stockholm, Sweden. Non of my previous pants have ever survived that long and they are still OK. I wonder if I should by another pair though, just in case they would stop producing them.

Good pants!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have just spent the last three weeks paddling around the Gulf of California (Isla Tiburon) and these pants are the best. Lightweight for sun protection but durable enough to take the abuse of hiking around the mountains. They were my go to pants every single day. 21 days in the field and still going strong.

Great pants - but expensive

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Wore these pants hiking and trekking in Ecuador for two weeks. Great fit,the zip pockets are convenient for stashing a variety of items, and the weight of the material is just about right for hiking and knocking around town. I normally wear a size 34 waist, but the 36 waist fit me better in these pants. The only downside - very expensive. I'll watch for them to go on sale and then purchase another pair.

reluctant to buy these. The 5 zip pockets were bomb. Have two pairs I wear for prescribed backcountry use and when I'm not in my work attire. Tell Arc'Teryx to go back a revision. Bump the price but put the 5 zips back. There is no Arc'Teryx substitute, especially for an inseam challenge gentleman like myself. OK You win, this is still the best backcountry pant for me!

Great Pants :Light, resistant, flexible

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these pants to replace my old ex-officio hiking pants.

The characteristics I was looking for were: light, resistant to abrasion, capable of retaining warmth yet breathable, flexible but not too baggy (a lot of American models tend to be too baggy for me these days).
I also wanted the pants to have many pockets, yet still be stylish enough for casual wear in the city for my travels around the globe.

These pants fit that description almost perfectly. They are not as baggy as the Ramparts from Arcteryx, so they are better for my intended use - but this comes at a price - they are more expensive.

I am using them right now for an extended trip, and they are so wonderful that I have just ordered a second pair. They are very light,so you can carry many pairs without adding much weight - a welcome characteristic both for backpacking adventures and standard overseas tourism.

The Light carbide color I got look very nice.

Won't buy new model

I have one pair of the Palisade pants and 3 pairs of the shorts, all of which I love for casual wear. They're extremely comfortable, look great, and hold items securely in their 5 zippered pockets.

That was then. This is now: no zippers on the slash pockets; no more back pocket The 5 zips were a unique feature that Arc'teryx chose to change. Why? To save a few bucks? They never asked me. I'll wait until they mend - or zip- their ways before buying more.

Same here. I have two pair of Palisades shorts and one Palisades Pant. When I got the pant I said, YES! Cargo pocket on each side!!!. I want that for the shorts also" Then I just checked both this week and the slash pockets on both do not have zippers :-(. One of he main reasons I bought these in the first place was all pockets zipper. I have lost enough cell phones while riding. I also liked the little pocket. Especially when they made it a little bit bigger. Now that is gone, a good trade for 2 slant + 2 cargo. BUT, I must have the zippers.

The new palisade pant is more"urban casual"The older version was much more rugged outdoor performance. The slash pockets don't replace the zippers,For 140 bucks it should have 5 zippers and you should be able to beat it to death

Perfect Hiking Pant

I've been searching for the perfect hiking pant for some time - this is definitely it. Sits up on the waist with a very comfortable fleece lining. The cargo pockets have a slim profile when not in use, but hold plenty when needed (perfect size for a passport with cash / travel docs). The material of the pants is synthetic, light and comfortable. Doesn't absorb odor, which is nice (put that to the test in Africa with one pair over 6 days, no showers and plenty of dirt). Food, sweat, blood, dirt all come out in the wash, no problem. I love them so much I bought a second pair.

Nice pants

My favorite hiking pants. I also got a pair of Palisade shorts , which are also excellent.

What I like:
- Excellent athletic fit. Good looking and very comfortable. I got the light carbide color which looks great.
- Clearly designed for outdoor use and well suited to backpacking, with water repellant quick drying fabric, light weight, a minimalist built in belt, and just enough stretch.
- No velcro. Zippers and so much classier.
- Pockets are lined with nylon, not mesh.
- They're clearly well made, using a mix of lamination and stitching. Still, I wish they still made all their stuff in Canada.

What I don't like:
- The built in nylon belt doesn't hold position well. I found a rubber O-ring can be wrapped around the plastic buckle to make it hold better.
- The cargo pocket zipper pulls are exposed and sit in the middle of your thighs when the pockets are closed. I don't like the way they rub against the bottom of my desk. Admittedly this isn't exactly the kind of thing you'd care about when out for a hike, but I like to wear these around town and even at work, so I notice these things.

The pocket configuration is completely different than last year's model. These have two ordinary front pockets without zippers, just like any casual pants, plus two zippered cargo pockets, but they don't have back pockets at all. Back pockets aren't really that useful anyway. Sitting on your wallet isn't good for your back, and sitting on your cell phone is a good way to crack the screen, so what can you really do with them anyway? Plus they're useless when wearing a backpack.

I ordered a pair of these pants and really...

I ordered a pair of these pants and really like them. The size is good but the rise is aa bit short. Do you have any pant made of the same material, but with a longer rise?

Best Answer Responded on

the Arc'teryx Rampart pant is made using the same fabric in a more relaxed fit...

Very Disappointed

They changed them from the last version. There were three additional zipper pockets on the last version. The two front hand pockets were zippered and deeper on the last model. Plus there was a zippered back pocket. They also feel like the rise has been shortened.

The old style pants were great pants for traveling. These will not be nearly as nice. I have to keep them cause I am leaving on a trip, but next time I am just going to REI so that I am not surprised by a model change.

I too love these pants!

Great pants. I wear them for everything. Hiking, archery, bouldering, banjo playing and everyday work. My kids always ask me why I always wear the same pants,( I own 5 pair) and I tell them it's for the comfort. Plus chicks dig them! The 2012 version fit better than last year's cut, less baggy in the seat! I like the gray color best.

My boyfriend simply loves Arcteryx pants

This was a gift for my boyfriend and I just wanted to go with something I'd be sure he would like it. I was right! He does not stop talking all the greatest things about these pants, how soft and comfy they are. I can tell, he is in love with these pants!
