Trim the fat, but not the warmth.

The mornings and nights during your week-long climbing trip to Vedauwoo can be chilly when you aren't sending it. Throw on the Arc'teryx Men's Nuclei Hooded Insulated Jacket to maximize your warmth without being weighed down. The Aieretica lining and face fabric is tightly constructed and highly tenacious, which means it can take the abrasion of the sharp Vedauwoo rock if you brush up against it.

The Nuclie is stuffed with Coreloft insulation, which is made with highly crimped multi-denier siliconized polyester yarn, so, basically, it is lightweight and breathable, compressible and has an excellent loft retention. You can put the Nuclie in the interior stow pocket when not in use, and you can also use the clip-in point for attaching it to a harness.

  • Airetica ripstop lining and face fabric
  • Coreloft synthetic insulation
  • Interior stow pocket
  • Clip-in point
  • Zippered hand pockets

Perfect Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 11"
    Weight: 155 lbs
    Size Purchased: Medium

I have owned a ton of Arc'teryx coats, and so far this is my favorite piece for warmth to weight. Compresses really small into the included stuff sack, the shell fabric is nice and light, but seems very resilient. Super light and really warm for anything I have used it for, and can stuff down to nothing when you aren't using it. Simple no frills great insulation and one piece that I will definitely never get rid of. Highly recommended.

What is the center back length of a medium?

Very nice, just not for me.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs small

Very nice, soft, warm. Wasn't very long past my waste, I got the XL and I'm 6'4" 200. The Aruna color is more copper/maroon than it is red. Which is the biggest reason that I'm returning it. There is nothing wrong with this jacket. Just not for me. My only suggestion would be to lengthen the body past the hips and get a true red color. Love this brand as a whole and would recommend this coat to anyone looking for a very warm, very soft, high quality top layer for being out and about in cold temperatures.

Exceptional Midweight Layering Piece!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This is my first piece of Arc'teryx gear, and I'm extremely pleased with it. Perfect detailing, a very trim, almost-tailored fit, great hood design, and it's amazingly warm & comfy for the weight (my XL weighs under 11 oz). I'm a lanky 6' 5", 220 lbs, and the XL fits me perfectly. I've got room underneath for a midweight layer, but it's streamlined enough to fit under a hardshell. I love the extra long sleeves and drop hem in the back.
It is warmer & less breathable than the Atom LT, but that's a plus if you're using it as I am - primarily as an outer layer in cold, windy conditions while hiking, hanging out in camp, apres ski, or around town. I wouldn't use this for high-extertion activities unless it's really cold; it will not vent well enough. But it is versatile and breathable enough for moderate activity in cold conditions.
I've tried midweight insulating jackets from Stoic, First Ascent, Patagucci, Montbell, and Flylow, but this jacket easily beats them all (for me) in terms of fit, comfort, utility, and overall quality. My quest for the perfect midweight layering piece is finally over!

Warm/light but not breathable

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This jacket is very light and warm but has poor breathability. Even while standing around belaying and not sweaty, I frequently have to unzip the jacket to vent moisture or it quickly builds up, especially in the armpits. Unfortunately I lose my heat at the same time. Wouldn't even consider doing something active in this even if it was very cold, or I would sweat it out in 5 minutes.

Good piece but if I could do it again I would get the Atom LT.

The bomb

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket is very warm for it's weight, fits great, and has excellent all-around features. I'm very impressed with it. I didn't get it as a breathable layer (get an Atom LT if you want less warmth but more breathability) so I can't knock points off there because it's exceeding my expectations of anticipated use.

I tend to run hot so even on a 20 degree day, having one of these or an Atom LT on and exerting myself at all would be a little much.

Light, warm, not very breathable

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Like many others, I am comparing the Nuclei to the gold standard of synthetic insulated jacket that is the Atom LT. A bit of background, I owned my Atom LT for 4+ years now, I am basically wearing it everyday when a little warmth and wind protection is needed. The great thing about Atom LT is you basically don't have to take it off, it hits the magical trifecta of "warm, windproof, and breathable" to a level that is great for 3 season use. My main activities are hiking, backpacking, and climbing.

Comparing between Nuclei and Atom LT, the biggest difference is in the arm pit area, Atom LT has the power stretch fleece material, while Nuclei is nylon fabric throughout. This makes Nuclei warmer, perhaps a little lighter, but not as breathable as Atom LT. I went snowshoeing last weekend in 35-45F, no wind weather, wearing a long sleeve base layer, a thin First Ascent fleece hoody, and Nuclei. Immediately I overheated on the uphill section (2000 ft. in 3 miles)and have to take Nuclei off. Because of its all nylon construction, there is no exit for the sweat vapor to go. I can see this as a good thing on a windy day, but if you tend to sweat a lot when moving, this can cause problems. My synthetic base layer stay wet on the downhill bit because I put the Nuclei on when I got to the top. I know that if I had my Atom LT, I will at least be dry by the time I got back to the trail head.

I plan to use my Nuclei for belaying and hiking on windy days, and as a cold weather around-town piece. It is still a wonderfully crafted jacket, but in my opinion not as versatile as the Atom LT.

Amazing Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was looking for a mid weight jacket to wear under my sidewinder sv and over mid/light weight merino shirt for skiing in 15-25F. This jacket worked perfectly. Can be wore while bopping around the village in 30s with just a light sweater underneath. Good water resistants. Also, packs down well.

I'm 5'4, 125lbs, 34D chest, broad shoulders and long arms with narrow hips/waist and no butt. The arms were a bit long, but worked well b/c could easily tuck under my ski mitts. Enough room for multiple layers underneath w/o being a puffy. Good length, and not too long for sidewinder sv. I have a men's small.

BTW - I ski hot. So, if you have a tendency to get cold..this may not be enough warmth for you in the temps that I mentioned above.

You've review a TON of stuff ! Holy crap! Where do you ski at?

Sorry, just saw this posting. Yeah, I love the outdoors so, want my gear/wear to live up to what I do. Also, I rely heavily on reviews for choosing what to buy so, figured it would help others if I posted some myself

My most recent trip was to Mammouth Mtn., which was amazing. Very open trails..not as narrow as Colorado or east coast. Similar to trails in Jackson Hole, but a bit longer and wider.

How about you?

VERY warm for the weight

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

The Nuclei is very warm, well, even without taking into account the weight, or lack of it. Packs into a very small bundle, cuffs fit well, though not quite as good as the Atom LT. Sizing, for me, is a bit on the small side, especially across the chest. I was a little surprised at that. I had hoped that it would be a bit of a looser fit than the Atom LT. Especially as I was wanting to use (the Nuclei) as a minimalist belay jacket-however, that is not a deal-breaker, by any means. The best part is the warmth of this thing, flat amazing for the weight. That is enough to earn my respect.

Perfect feather-light insulating piece

Very warm - comfortable by itself to the 30s, and that with a wind. Sheds light precipitation. Packs to nothing into a tiny stuffsack. Layers smoothly. Well constructed hood (non helmet compatible - a plus for me - yet bigger than "scuba" with excellent visibility and coverage). Arm length and cuffs are spot on. Then as a bonus, looks very sharp as well - have worn the heron color proudly around town and to my executive meetings over a button-up shirt. And all for 10 ounces? (That's what my hoodless, gridded, non-wind blocking ultralight fleeces have weighed). Perfect!

Great Fall to Spring Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Trekking, climbing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing build up a lot of body heat and the Nuclei runs hot, not breathing as well as the Atom LT. IMHO the these are both great mid-layer and stand alone jackets for different conditions. The Nuclei is just a little too warm during heavy exertion.

They have proven to me over and over they are great jackets for any active Fall to Spring pursuits. They are cut similarly, the Nuclei offering just a little more room for layering. The shoulder to arm articulation (angel-wing cut) and longer sleeve-length are great in forward or upward extension as you ski or climb or trek and your wrists and midsection remain covered. I've given the Nuclei five stars because it is so well made and the company is dedicated. I just really like what great gear does, a lot!
