Great travel pack

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Just small enough to not cause problems on a plane and just big enough to fit a full rack and rope plus food and jacket for a multi pitch climb. One of two pack i use and it is perfect. The fabric is surprisingly water proof, super burly too. Convenient organization, comfortable straps and it's light for being such a beefy pack. A true mountain pack that won't let you down when you pack it full of gear and hike it cross country over granite slabs and through dense brush to free a beautiful line up an unknown peak. All the while being at home in a tea shop in darjeeling waiting for the weather to break. Perfect size pack for everything you need and few extras that you'd like to have.

Poor value for money

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

A nice, go-anywhere size. Works fine as a carry-on. Good ergonomics on the hip-belt; this pack handles weight well. Seams, etc., all appear durable. Fatal flaw: the lid is non-adjustable (per the other reviews: non-extendable, non-removable), which severely limits the versatility and adjustability of the pack. The lid design transforms what could be a very versatile pack into a large day-hiking pack with limited utility value. I bought this for alpine climbing as well as day and overnight (summer) backcountry field work, carrying a range of collapsible equipment and gear. The bottom line: this pack is in the back of my closet; I mostly use it for air travel. I continue to find much better functionality from comparably-priced designs from the obvious competitors (e.g., Black Diamond, Osprey).

I have the Kata 45 and really like it except that the lid is NOT extendable or removable like the description here says it is.
