Kappa AR Insulated Pant - Men's

Throw on the Arc'teryx Men's Kappa AR Pant and protect yourself against cold alpine air. Arc'teryx made this windproof pant with Windstopper fabric and integrated Primaloft Sport insulation for quilt-free uniform warmth. The cozy, compressible Kappa AR turns cold stretches around camp into warm fun. Adjust the waist to find the proper fit, and unzip the full-separating side zippers when you need to remove this Arc'teryx pant over your shoes, or ventilate your legs. A reinforced seat and knees combine with a DWR finish to take a beating in the outdoors and improve your comfort in sketchy conditions. Pull the cuff drawcord tight to keep cold weather out, and spend your days in the mountains planning routes rather than how to stay warm.

Bottom Line: Windproof and breathable high-level Arc'teryx warmth.

Why are the inseams so extraordinarily short on these pants?

Why are the inseams so extraordinarily short on these pants? According to the size chart, a size XL reg
has only a 31.8" inseam.

I've never seen such as short inseam on an XL pant. Very frustrating.

can't think of one bad thing to say about these pants. the shell material is pretty close to waterproof as i wore them for 8 hours in a snow storm and i spent about 2 of those hours sitting / laying / digging into snow with them and they never got wet. I would buy these again in a heartbeat

Hi, Are these a decent resort/short distance skiing pants?

Hi,
Are these a decent resort/short distance skiing pants? I have the gamma SK which are great for snowshoeing/XC skiing but a bit cold in the chairlift (yeah my bum!), thus looking for insulated one.

Your bum will almost always freece in the lifts, because you will compress the loft in your pant when sitting on it - however, primaloft handles this better than down.
A sitting mat would be your best option.

The Kappa AR would be an OK skiing pants (it's really designed as a belay/camp pant), but the best insulated ski pants are the Arc'teryx Titan, because they have reinforced instep, more durable fabric, and are totally water proof, as well as windproof.
If you want a bit more warmth and protection than the Gamma SK, but not a fully insulated version, check the Sabre SV (love these) pant or Stingray pant from Arc'teryx.

Toasty! Instant warmth when putting them on.
Tested 'em out this weekend snow camping in the sierras at around 9000'. A storm was coming in. We experienced winds up to 50mph and temps down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit during the late evenings. I wore these along with the Fission LT (new model is now referred to as the Kappa SV). Both these pants and the jacket have windstopper outer material and 200 g/m2 primaloft sport material. Underneath each outer layer I was wearing smartwool midweight base layers and nothing else. I was a comfortable toasty just sitting around camp. I wore them the next morning as well and began to overheat around 35 degrees. In addition to the warmth, the wind protection was amazing. Having 30 - 50 mph winds, was kinda fun minus the snow that pounded you as well. Anyway, the point being the windstopper material is a marvel. In addition to blocking out wind, it helps retain the heat in the jacket as well. The wind just made you loose your balance from time to time, but just felt like pressure against your body. No penetration through the material was perceived.

Before I bought these I a little concerned about the fact that they weren't Gore-Tex. I talked with an Arc'teryx tech rep and he informed me the material was very durable and one step away from waterproof. He assured me the only time the material might let water through was during a heavy, heavy rainstorm. The good news, 1) you'll need these in sub freezing conditions and thus you'll have snow instead of rain. 2) if you do happen to need them during the rain and the material gets wet, the primaloft will still insulate. Primaloft was originally developed for the army as a down alternative for just this purpose. The rep told me I could consider the material waterproof in lighter rain and any type of snow, even wet, sierra snow. I further asked him about sitting in the snow my body heat melting the snow to water. Apparently there is nothing to be worried about. After this weekend, I don't have anything to change my thoughts about the above information.

The full length zippers and adjustable draws at the waist and ankles were great. There is an insulation flap behind the zips so you don't experience any cold spots. The crotch zipper proved to have its own virtue as well. Having full length zips is a great thing to have when you want to get that layer on quick without having to take off your boots.
So why 4 stars. One of the leg zips have the tendency to unzip (an inch or so) when you punch through the snow. I might just have the elastic cinches adjusted a little too tight at the ankles. Hopefully arc'teryx will eventually add a snap closure at the ankle, similar to their waterproof shells. Not a big deal. This problem never caused my baselayer to get wet.

Anyway, have a good time and stay warm. You'll be hanging out at camp feeling like your wearing a toasty pair of sweat pants back home on your couch by a fire in the fireplace.

Do they compress well enough to carry them as a backup/emergency piece at the bottom of the pack?

I have the previous version of this pant (the Fission LT: http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Arcteryx-Fission-LT-Pant-Mens/ARC0833M.html) which has very similar specs. Assuming that these are similar, then my answer is no - they do not pack up very small at all. They are very warm, but pretty bulky too. If you want insulated pants that could serve as an emergency backup, I would consider something more along the lines of the Mountain Hardwear compressor pants or the Montbell Thermawrap pants instead. You won't have the same durable shell fabric, but you'll get a warm pant that you won't begrudge throwing in your pack just in case...

As there can't be too many people in the world with the name "Safet".....and I happen to have just recently been stuck in a snow storm with him (he was kind enough to carve out a snow shelter as I relaxed in the snow drinking hot soup) I'd have to say that I put these pants to more of a test in my recliner snow-chair as I stayed toasty warm! (or maybe it was the soup...)

No doubt about it.

the size is not listed, as in Short, Regular, or Long - it is my understanding that all Arc' technical pants are made in S/R/L. I assume that these are R since it doesn't specifically say... anyone bought these?

I'll let you know when I get 'em in - just ordered 'em today. After freezing my ass off up above Lone Pine, at Lake Muir, 11,000' (Mammoth Mtn/Mt Whitney area), I vowed I would make the switch to an INSULATED type of GoreTex product, rather than trying to layer up enough to stay warm (note the "big-fridge" effect of just Pro Shell or XCR alone with no insulation). I know the Primaloft combo works with both fabrics cause I love my Fission jackets so much - I have both the LT (Windstopper/Primaloft) and the SV (XCR/Primaloft). Hard to tell which is warmer cause the LT has only 130 gram Primaloft (but the warmer shell fabric), vs. the SV's 200 grams (with XCR). I think the SV is the warmer, tho. I can't imagine I will ever be cold again with my new combo going - Fission SV and new Kappa pants. My baselayers are old Rho's (Canadian- made back then!) and my mids are either Gamma SV Hoody, or my old Javelin Comp sidewinder-zipping hybrid (Shoeller DrySkin Extreme with XCR Shoulders, hood and arms - talk about WELL MADE - I bought it back in '03 - incredible stitching). So, to sum up.... I'm looking forward to the next snow cave!
--------------
OK, I just got the Kappa AR pants, super fast, from this great company. They ARE made in China, tho. I also got he Arc' Celeris windbreaker (Thailand), and the Stinger Gloves (China). The gloves are beautiful. Windbreaker is not up to Canadian quality - but you have to know what you're looking at to tell - it's just a "feel" thing.
