Description

The Gamma SK eats powder turns for breakfast.

The folks at Arc'teryx sat back and considered everything that would make a vigorous day of ski touring more comfortable, then incorporated it into the Women's Gamma SK Pant. The result: an impressively durable, breathable, flexible softshell skiing and alpine climbing pant that keeps you comfortably dry.
  • Snow-shedding, breathable, stretchy Burly softshell fabric moves with you and is treated with DWR for extra water-resistance
  • Adjustable cinch belt lets you perfect your fit
  • High waist helps keep the snow from creeping into your pantalones (this isn't a snowboarder's park fit, people)
  • Removable quick-adjust suspenders are there when you need 'em
  • Stretch-woven powder cuffs help seal the snow out
  • Fully articulated patterning means your movement will never be inhibited, whether you have an AT binding or crampon on your foot

I got these pants in 4 regular (I'm 5' 6" tall and 136 lbs). I love the fit and comfort. Days of backcountry and resort skiing, they are just perfect and durable. I really want to buy another pair.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought these to replace a pair of Patagonia Alpine Guide pants for backcountry skiing in the PNW. Like most Arc'teryx products I am impressed with the initial fit, waist is snug (in a good way) but the hips and thighs offer plenty of room for movement without feeling baggy.

I see the backcountry.com lists the Gamma SK as having removable suspenders, however my 2012/2013 Gamma SK in Raku does not. I was a little disappointed the women's does not have suspenders like the Men's Gamma SK. I worry that they will sag while wearing a pack. I agree with other reviews that the pant seems long and the knee gathers don't hit me quite right. For resort or sidecountry this wouldn't worry me, but for those who fiddle with buckles skiing yo-yo laps too long pants aren't always great.

With that said, Arc'teryx makes stellar products which tend to exceed my expectations (don't get me started on drop seat on their bibs.... love!) so we'll see!

I bought the 10 regular. I am a size 8, sometimes 10 and 5'7" tall. I was looking for a pair of heavy duty pants for hiking at high altitude in the cold. I actually picked another pair for that trip but had to keep these too because the fit was so nice. There is room to put long underwear under them which I wanted. I don't need them but will most like use them to ski. I haven't used them yet but Arc Teryx is such a great company.

Hope that helps

Are these a "laminated to a membrane" style construction?

Definitely not laminated. The Gamma SK is constructed using what is referred to as Plated Weave. Basically, there are nylon and polyester fibers and the weave technique places the nylon on the outside for durability and weather shedding, and the poly inside for moisture management and softness. This results in a super breathable fabric, that stretches and has great weather resistance. Since there is no membrane, like windstopper, or even a glue film these are much more breathable than laminated membrane softshell.

These are a softshell (water-resistant, wind-resistant, very BREATHABLE). They have a DWR (durable water repellency) which should help water bead up and snow will sluff off instead of soaking in. They'll do great should you get caught in intermittent snow and or a light sprinkle, but don't have the waterproofing of a laminate membrane.

They fit great except they are too long. I have to return them but can't figure out what else I will like as well.

I got these on sale and really like them. I use them for downhill skiing but I can see using them for winter hiking and snowshoeing for sure. They are relatively thin, waterproof, warm, and practical. The details and fit are great. I am 5'5" and 125 and got a 4. They are a bit too long but acceptable. Hope they last 10 years.
