Clean, smart, softshell design. Oh, wait: and it's sooo nice and fuzzy.

The Arc'teryx Women's Firee Softshell Jacket craves aerobic activity on cold days, but it won't complain if you take it for a jaunt around town either. Its high-loft fleece interior and Polartec Power Shield wind-resistant outer face are just the right blend to insulate, protect, and draw moisture away from you. Excellent breathability means you won't feel like you're in a steam room on your next late-autumn hike or spring ski tour, and a DWR finish enhances the Firee Jacket's snow-shedding ability.

great jacket but...

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I had just written a review on this jacket(which I love!) but then called Arcteryx with a question and they suggested that for the aerobic activities I will be doing, I choose another model(like the Atom in this price range)...they said that the Firee would be too warm for high activity. Also want to add that Backcountry has excellent customer service.

great jacket

I compared several different softshell jackets (this was a big purchase for me) and the firee was by far the coziest. I have worn it on chilly bike rides and hikes so far(no snow yet) and it was warm and comfortable. I did get a little overheated but still liked this one best. Great sleeves that fit snugly over the wrists to keep out weather and great adjustable hood. Looks much nicer in person than in the photo. Thought it would be bulky looking but actually very cool jacket. 2 thumbs up.

Won't keep it even at half price

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Pros: It's a lot lighter than I first expected, which is good. The outside material looks and feels good. The hood is well constructed so you have a slight brim if you're using it in rain.

Cons: Biggest downer for me is that the fuzzy fleece inside is not at all soft. It just isn't inviting...feels like an old stuffed toy. I'm not doubting how well it works at keeping you warm, but for the price I was looking for a jacket I would love.

The length is a too short for what I was looking for - from the picture I expected something 4-6 inches longer. The chin flap is very stiff making it uncomfortable when you have it zipped up high. The hood will ride high if you have it zipped all the way up, which is nice for keeping your neck warm, but pulls that uncomfortably stiff chin flap against your throat.

So if you could only choose one, between the Firee and Strato or Atom LT, which would be a good option for cold weather climbing and attempting to stay warm at the campsite?

Awesome Jacket!

What a great jacket!! I ordered this for my wife's b-day for an everyday coat and not just for hiking trips. She hates big bulky coats and this one is just perfect. It is very warm but still breathes and cuts throughout the wind wonderfully. The hood is a nice touch too. She likes the fact that it comes down over her hips and keeps her kidneys from getting cold. Some of the other jackets she had tried on came down to just her waist. Be mindful of the sizing though. I would not consider my wife a large woman by any means, but at 5'6" and about 180 and very busty, she required an XL in size. She is very happy with it and so am I!!

How do you decide between the Firee and the Gamma MX Hoody?

Responded on

You want toasty when you're walking or standing, the Firee. You want comfy when skiing or climbing, the Gamma MX.

So it's nice and snug and fleecey on the inside, like the Hyllus - but warmer?

Responded on

Same warmth. The cut is a little roomier than the Hyllus and the Polartec face fabric is more windproof and weatherproof. Meant more for an outer layer and the hyllus is better used as a mid.

I've got two questions about the Firee: Does the hood fit over the helmet? And is this the most sturdy/warm softshell among Ac'teryx softshells? Thanks!

Responded on

The Firee hood will fit over smaller helmets, but it's probably a bit tight if you've got a bulkier model. This is the warmest softshell Arc'teryx makes.

Responded on

Agreed, it's not as roomy as some hoods, but it fits over a Petzl climbing helmet.
