If you’ve been searching for a warm, form-fitting insulating layer with standalone functionality, the Arc’teryx Atom MX Insulated Jacket serves up a plate of versatile goodness. Synthetic insulation on the torso and upper arms provides crucial core warmth, while Polartec Power Stretch fleece on the side panels offers excellent breathability when you work up a sweat. A DWR coating facilitates use as an outer layer in mild conditions, and the tricot-lined waist allows bunch-free layering under a harness.

Bottom Line: Just the right midlayer for aerobic activity in frigid temps, and just the right outer layer for mild temps.

Gusseted from the hip to the forearm. The gusseted fabric under the arm is also stretchy. Freedom of movement is an understatement.

Very light, totally unrestrictive, much more breathable than a soft shell. Used this over a mid weight base layer (synthetic Mammut) for Alpine snow and ice climbing in -15ºC to -20º C, working hard and moving fast. Apart from some zipping and unzippng I never had to change layers the whole day ! hardly needed a belay jacket (no wind that day) was dry as a bone at the end of the day.
Don't know how durable it will be in the long run ?, feels very fragile but it did stand up to some bushwacking without damage. Made in Thailand !

I totally agree on the review. This is the most versatile jacket i have ever had, especially in that it works across such a wide range of temperatures as an outer layer, and as a layering piece for really harsh conditions.

Durability is a concern though, I tore a hole fairly easily on some rocks. Would recommend it anyway, guess one can't really ask for toughest of outer shells in a breathable packable insulated jacket ...

What is the difference between the Atom MX and the Atom LT. from the pics it looks like the MX is not insulated all around - guessing it is powerstretch material. any other ideas?

The Arc'teryx Atom MX doesn't use the Coreloft insulation around the waist, but instead uses a light polyester fleece. This is designed to be worn under a harness, and reduces the amount of material between the belt and your bod. Additionally, the lower arms use the hardface stretch fleece for reducing bulk and keeping a clear view of your hands.
