Here's what others have to say...

A must-have layer when weight matters.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I really like vests as a mid layer, over a long sleeve base and under a shell, as your arms maintain more mobility. This is a great mid-layer for many applications, but its very light weight makes it great for cool weather backpacking and throwing in your carry-on. It looks great, and although I would prefer a smaller waist and more room in the chest, it still fits well across most builds.

Really nice vest but...

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

I am 5'11, 30 waist and 145 lbs. I found that the small isn't quite snug enough in the waist and upper shoulder (the upper half of the shoulders on the vest doesn't have the elastic band). It fits me well, don't get me wrong, but with the lack of elastic all the way around the shoulders and the lack of drawstring at the waist, there is space for wind to get in which is not so great if temp is getting low. Love the quality of build and the look, but those details make it tough to stick with it. May need to return for something that has a waist drawstring and tighter armholes.

I will clarify that this would not be much of an issue if it was being used to layer under a jacket, but I like wearing vests as an outer later over base-layers when the temp permits for more freedom of movement and comfort. So ideally, a vest worn consistently in this manner would be better sealed off from the elements (namely wind) at the edges.

In spite of all of this I am still considering keeping it though. It really is a nice vest and I will stick with it if the next one I try (Patagonia Nano-Puff Vest) doesn't beat it out with the above mentioned criteria. The Atom Vest scores points for style, comfort, range of motion, warmth to weight ratio and craftsmanship.

Ideal 2nd/3rd layer or outer

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I'm on my third Atom LT Vest after buying one a couple years ago, but all three are in great condition. I use one for skiing (primarily on top of a quarter-zip and below a shell on those 20/30 degree days), one for hiking as a standalone on top of a LS thermal, and one for tooling around town. Freedom of motion is unparalleled with this as your outer layer, but 60g of coreloft suddenly feels like nothing. For me, the weight tradeoff is a positive.

Problem with wind flap behind zipper

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I bought this vest in XL and ended up returning it due to what I would consider a defective wind flap. The flap sits behind the main zipper and because its not rigid, it catches in the zipper every time I zipped it up and down. You can imagine how annoying that is. You can pull it away from the zipper and that obviously prevents it from catching. The material and design are great otherwise, and the wind flap defect ruin an otherwise stellar layering piece. Frankly I am hoping they somehow hear this feedback and fix it because I would snap it up then.

I agree with this review... There could have been better design with the wind flap and I have had similar issues with the zipper.

Warm and fits well

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I was looking for a warm layer without the bulk in the arms. This was a perfect choice. It is warm, stylish and fits me perfectly. I am 5'8" and 140lbs and the small is the perfect size for me. This is my first Arc'teryx piece and I'm now looking for more!

Multi Functional Piece

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I own alot of Arcteryx. This is a great piece. I am 6' 175lb with an athletic build. The medium fits perfect. I can use it under my Atom SV ( size large) for additional layering on cold snowshoeing or hiking initiatives. It works well layering under a Gamma MX softshell. Even over a baselayer during the shoulder seasons. It breathes incredibly well , is much warmer than you'd think given its weight, and is a no brainer to bring with based on packability

Really great mid layer piece! Fits big!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I don't really wear this brand anymore but once I tried on this Atom LT vest at the local outfitter I had to have it. It is warm for the pack weight yet thin enough to fit inside the slimmest of Softshells. Even so it is still lofty and snug without being too tight but just remember, unless you have a basketball player sized torso, to size down.

At 5'8"/155lbs I usually wear medium in everything but the small Atom LT vest fit me. The tags even read next to the Small that it is equivalent to a Men's 38R which is a Medium in the USA.

Note: there is no hem cinch and the hemline has an elastic band that hugs your belt line when you zip it up so it is better to make sure the vest is not baggy when you buy it or the hem will just hang loose and cold air will blow in from the underside.

My only gripe is these are so limited in quantity that I had to wait an entire year for my size and color choice to return once the Fall 2011 stock had sold out. And yes by Thanksgiving pickings will be slim on these so it is pointless to wait for them to go on sale because they will already be gone or they will immediately disappear from existence the minute online retailers send out the annual Arcteryx Sale email.

Even at $144 the price is not so bad considering all of Arcteryx other vest items start at $199 (and those are all non-insulated fleece vests).

It is important to note that by 'design' the Atom LT vest is meant to be and works best, in my opinion, as a snug fitting mid layer and NOT an over sized outer layer!

The nylon outer shell material is super soft and wont last past a morning of mild bushwhacking.

Also yes it does have three generous pockets: two bonafide great hand-warmer zippered pockets and one deep zippered internal chest pocket.

This makes the entire piece a great deal considering.

Really great mid layer piece! Fits big!

Thanks Olaf for another fine review. I wonder if the fit is actually different than the Atom Lt jacket? The jacket says trim and this says athletic. I am smaller than you and the Lt jacket small is slim on me. Hope your still enjoying your Rab neutrino :)

Amazing

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My absolute favorite outerlayer Item, I have had a number of coats and vests form various brands but this is by far the most comfortable. Great for everything from running around town to spring backcountry exploits where a coat is just to much for the hike. Love it. I have last years model and it has held up to more abuse than any article of clothing ever should. Still looks feels and acts like new. Amazing product from a great brand.

I guess I just bought the last Nightshade...

I guess I just bought the last Nightshade in large for 104 bucks. Thats a good deal. I own the Atom LT in nightshade L and noticed that this has a different cut! One is athletic fit and one is trim. We shall see. I am 5'11 175.

Updates? Was the description just a typo, do they fit the same?

Runs Large

Depending on your preference, this vest may run large. I prefer my running clothes to fit fairly close, but at 6'1", 195 lbs, 42" chest and an athletic build, I found the vest to be pretty baggy. I am happy with it, but I would have preferred a more steamlined cut. The build quality is superb and the breathability of the sides and the wind protection up front make for a well designed running companion. I gave it four out of five because the Face material isn't "bound" to the insulating material. I don't know if this is a design element to aid in wicking moisture, but is a bit annoying. I don't think anyone will regret this purchase, just understand that it is not an insulated softshell vest.

Responded on

Scott, what size vest did you buy that you found to be baggy, and what size did you end up going with?

Responded on

Yeah what size did you buy?

Responded on

Sorry for the long delay before responding, I went with the Large, which is what I initially ordered. It is too big for the fit I prefer but it functions as needed. My current location precluded returning it for what would have likely been a better fitting medium.
