Great tool

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great tool and every fisherman and fisher woman should have one. They are incredibly easy to use and are the most efficient and fair way to remove a fly. Remember, the fish has just fought for its life so treating it fairly and with care is of utmost importance. As soon as u land ur monster, use this to take the hook out by running it down the tippet, and pop the hook out. Do it while the fish is still in the net (and still in the water please!) and then u can scoop the fish out quickly for ur hero shot. If you are a serious fisherman, please get one of these. Size small for most trout, bass, bigger size for large streamers, steelies, saltwater...

forgotten classic

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got my first ketchum release probably 10years ago. I used it occasionally but it mostly hung on my vest and looked cool Recently while digging through my old stuff I found and have started using it again. It is a lift saver when the water is cold! Plus it's better for the fish. You won't be getting your sicky sweet instagram shots when you use this thing, but your hands will be warm and so will your heart when you watch the unharmed fish swim away. Standard size is most useful and can work with most fly sizes although it gets tricky when you drop below size 20. Great on many utah streams where you can catch a multitude of small fish and don't need to lift them out of the water.

Interesting Tool

Fly fisherman like gadgets and tools and this was one of the more interesting ones I have purchased recently. It takes a few fish to get used to, but once you have it down, it is simple to get fish off the line without handling them. This is important for 2 main reasons. It is better for the fish as you dont need to handle them and, in the winter, its friggen cold putting your hands in the water! Ive used this on a bunch of 10-14 inch fish and it works fine, im questioning how well it'll work on a 16-20 inch fish, but we'll see in the future. (I hope) I also debarb all my hooks. I am not sure how this would work on a barbed hook.

Very useful

I bought this with some reservations given the gimmicks and gadgets out there in the fishing market. The 1st fish of the day I caught while having this on me just managed to swallow the fly several inches to the point where normally I'd be cutting the line, saying goodbye to the fly, and feeling bad that I'm releasing a fish with a hooked fly half blocking his throat (rusts and works out over time, but still, not the greatest solution). Might have been able to work it out with a hemostat, but not without excessive handling and torque to the fish. With the Ketchum release, I just slide it down the line and effortlessly popped the fly right out with very little fish handling. The fish was in great shape and swam off and the fly was in great condition and reused to catch another shortly thereafter. This now resides on the same retractor as my nippers. Unless you plan on keeping your fish or have the desire to be an absolute minimalist, this is a great tool to have. Highly recommended!
