Why We Like The Westgate 3 Tent

The ALPS Mountaineering Westgate 3 Tent keeps us comfortable and our gear organized on multi-day adventures in the backcountry. Since we can't control the weather, ALPS designed the Westgate with three poles to create a strong and sturdy framework that combats surprise storms. Its weatherproof fly and factory-sealed seams also keep out inclement weather to keep you and your gear dry. This fly securely buckles to the tent and is easily adjustable to keep the weather at bay. Two vestibules shelter backpacks and camping gear from the storm while internal mesh pockets and a gear loft help keep your small essentials close at hand.

Fared well in extreme weather

I just spent a weekend in driving wind & heavy rain. This tent help up extremely well in the sustained winds of 20-25 mph. Ventilation was good as I kept both roof vents open the entire time with no water entry. My only complaint was that I did get water seeping through the zipper on the fly. I could see that the 2 small velcro tabs were not enough to hold the flap in place, so water blew under the flap and seeped through. Compared to others I was camping with, this tent did really well though. One other note. This is not a 3 person tent. You likely could just barely fit 2 sleeping pads into it. Plenty roomy for a single camper though.

Tear in roof on second use

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Overall, this is a very nice tent. It is light and extremely fast and easy to assemble and take down (with or without the rainfly). The color coded poles are intuitive and easy to use. I have used it with and without the rainfly. The rainfly is excellent. Ventilation on the tent is very good. The cargo loft is small, but useful for things like keys, phone, etc. On my second outing, I noticed a small hole in the roof. It looks like it is wear related, but I don't see how that is possible on a second use. I assume I got a defective tent, as the overall quality of Alps products is very good. Very dissapointed.

5 years and still going strong

I?ve used this tent in Desert, alpine, and costal areas. For 5 years it?s been a go to. Assembly is painless. I really like the poles, they are a pretty sweet color and after hundreds of nights they have never bent, and still operate flawlessly. The size is perfect for 2 people with an air mattress. We still have room at our feet for our dog and the HUGE vestibules offer plenty of room for gear Storage. If you?re sleeping on Pads, I think there is sufficient room for 3 people. I?ve never felt in moisture on the interior walls which is my # 1 requirement. Nothing is worse than waking up to everything being damp. I?ve used it on a few multiday backpacking trips, it?s a bit heavy for one person but if you can split the load across a 2 or 3 people it is very nice. The stuff sack included is awesome. I?ve never struggled to get everything back in and the compression straps are still going strong. If I had to offer any criticism, it would be the lack of storage pockets inside the tent. There are a few but I?d love a few more options. All and all, I wouldn?t hesitate on buying this tent again. I?d recommend it to anyone looking for a do it all tent for a great budget price.
