For the long haul.

Explore in well-equipped comfort with the ultra-capable ALPS Mountaineering Caldera Backpack. With tons of smart design and organized cargo space, you can carry everything you need for a trip of reasonably epic proportions. Lightweight aluminum stays and a fully padded harness system support, stabilize, and distribute the load for optimal carrying comfort, while an adjustable suspension makes the Caldera comfortable for people of different sizes. ALPS hooked the Caldera up with an extendable drawcord lid, a top pocket that converts to a hip pack for quick peak-pushes, and tons of compression straps to lock down your load, along with water bottle pockets and a hydration sleeve to keep you well-lubricated on the trail. There's also an internal divider and rain cover, and a big ol' sleeping bag pocket to help you when you're packing up.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

If you're looking for all the features and quality of some of the biggest names in backpacking but need to save some money for whats going IN the pack, I'd absolutely recommend the Caldera. I've had the 5500 for 3 years and it's been with me on all my extended trips. Hydration bladder compatible? Check. Adjustable torso length? Check. Removable daypack? Yep. Built-in, easily packable/unpackable rain cover? Yessir. I also love having both top and front panel access. The front stretch neoprene pocket is great for a helmet or larger item. The compression straps around the sleeping bag compartment have plenty of give to squeeze your sleeping pad on the bottom outside of the pack. The hip belt pockets are big enough for everything you need to access while staying on the move. There's even a handy rescue whistle on the sternum strap! I keep thinking at some point the threading will start to unravel or the thin poly fabric will tear but have had no issues so far. And this is not a pack that I spent a lot of money on and am consciously trying to take care of while I'm out on the trail. I seriously can't get enough of this pack or this company. I'll add some pics of my favorite features
