If you own a cookstove or even just a pot and some matches, these freeze dried and dehydrated meals are the way to go. They're lightweight, compact, and super easy to prepare. The meals are packaged in resealable foil pouches. Most weigh between 5 and 7 ounces and offer 2 servings. To prepare a meal, just add a couple cups of hot water right to the pouch. A few minutes later you're ready to chow.

Gross...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I tried this once thinking it would be similar to Mountain House's Chicken Breast and Mashed Potatoes & I was wrong. It was edible but not enjoyable. Definitely sticking to Mtn. House.

This is a good one!

Great as a side to pork chops at our car camp. Potatoes were good, if we had had some butter, milk, or spices it would have been better, but after a long day, it hit the spot.

only ok

After trying these, I realized Mountain House is superior to AlpineAire in the quality and consistency of their dehydrated food. I would have given this a rating of 3, but since MH doesn't seem to make anything with mashed potatoes, I gave it a 4.

Try Mountain House Chicken Breast and Mashed Potatoes. It's by far the best freeze dried meal I've had. It's good enough that I've eaten it at home. Backcountry should carry this meal:

Tastes good but a lot of trouble to fix.

These are pretty tasty when prepared per directions. You have to mix the gravy and potatoes separately and then pour the gravy onto the taters. This is a pain if your traveling light and have only one pot. Really does serve two!

more spice

Not bad...they need to add more pepper and salt to this dish. A bit messy to prepare. The gravy is made separate from the potatoes. If you have some spice and add some peas to it, you will be happy.

much better than I had hoped for

The taste was awesome! Save this one for when you are really hungry, it will satisfy.
