So very bland

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I brought two of these meals on a backpacking trip, based on all the great reviews, and couldn't even manage to get them down. The first packet was so bland I thought maybe we had gotten a bad one, but the second tasted the same. I ended up taking a couple bites and leaving the rest for the animals. It needs salt, pepper, hot sauce, and a whole slew of other spices. If you are looking for a bland rice-based meal then this is your thing. If you want something more interesting try the Chicken Vindaloo, Mountain House's Chili Mac with Beef, or Mary Jane's Chilimac or Santa Fe Pasta.

Okra was a nice touch

This meal was very good. Some backpacking food either tastes too bland, or is very salty. This is neither. Good flavor and a mix of vegetables make this a "repeat meal" for me.

Good food!

I need gluten free, dairy free, and egg free meals and these fit the bill...deliciously!! I have used them o short and long 3 wk plus hikes and they are always great! The company says these are spicy... only mildly so unless you are ultra sensitive. The 2 potion size abt. 600 cal is just right for a BIG evening meal, eaten a bit early perhaps that will stoke your fire all night and not fail to satisfy... they are an A+ in my book!

My backcountry menu:

Rather than write a small review for each individual item I recently purchased I thought I would share it all in one concise review. (Note with most Mountain House I add 2-3 oz less than it recommends)

Recommend:

Breakfast:
Backpacker's Pantry Granola with Blueberries and Milk – Favorite :) (serve warm)
AlpineAire Strawberry Honey Granola With Milk – healthy and good! (serve warm)
Backpacker's Pantry Denver Omelet (needs pan) – best quick eggs I have tried.

Lunch/Dinner:
Mountain House Chicken Ala King – Favorite :)
Backpacker's Pantry Katmandu Curry - Yum
Mountain House Macaroni And Cheese – Oh to be a kid again!
AlpineAire Chicken Gumbo – Delicious

Sides/Deserts:
Mountain House Potatoes And Cheddar With Broccoli – Favorite :)
Mary Janes Farm Organic Garlic Pesto Fry Bread – I love bread! (bring oil)
Mountain House Peas – Eat your veggies! Add 1-2 oz less water
Mountain House Corn – Favorite, Add 1-2 oz less water :)
Mountain House Green Beans – Add 1-2 oz less water
Mary Janes Farm Organic Brownies – Yes really good!
Mountain House Ice Cream Sandwich – Don’t get the Neapolitan, this is much better.
Mountain House Blueberry Cheesecake – Nice size berries, make in a bowl NOT the package. (Note it will NOT keep
Overnight).

Pass:
Backpacker's Pantry Garlic Herb Mashed Potatoes – The Mountain House Potatoes and Cheddar with Broccoli are MUCH
better even the resident mouse in our cave didn’t like it.
Mountain House Scrambled Eggs With Bacon - Backpacker's Pantry Denver Omelet is much better IMO but requires a
pan.
Mountain House Scrambled Eggs With Ham - Backpacker's Pantry Denver Omelet is much better IMO but requires a pan.

Neutral:
Mary Janes Farm Organic Couscous And Lentil Curry – Not bad but I like my curry with more curry!
Mary Janes Farm Organic Black Bean Corn Bread – Not bad but NOT cornbread just a bread with some cornmeal in it.
Mountain House Noodles And Chicken – Yet to try will update
Mountain House Pasta Primavera – Yet to try will update
Mountain House Mexican Chicken With Rice – Yet to try will update
Mary Janes Farm Organic Alfredo Pasta – Yet to try will update
Backpacker's Pantry Chana Masala – Yet to try will update

mmmmm

between this and the chili mac, I'd be set for months! Could use a bit extra spice, but it has still got a great flavor! Says 2 servings, but if there are two hungry people, you might want one pack each.

totally disagree

Either i got a bad batch, or all the other reviews are wack. I bought this based on earlier reviews and was totally disappointed. I found it bland and ended up tossing more than half of it out, opting to chew on a piece of cardboard instead(which tasted great by comparison)

Responded on

I felt the same way! I couldn't even eat it.

This reminds me of my dads amazing gumbo. Great stuff and easy to make. What else can you want

Really good!!!

If you are really hungry this will suffice; it has really good spicy flavor...i had it when it was really cold, it even makes you sweat a little and get some extra heat going. :-p

my favorite

So far this one is my absolute favorite. Wonderfully spicy and very filling...definitely enough for two.

Almost as good as being in New Orleans

All jokes aside, this is good stuff. Well spiced and prepares well.

great camp food

Ok this meal packs a punch and is awesome. The two serving is for one hungry hiker....Add this to your list. Oh and bring a small bottle of Tabasco sauce.

Awesome

I ate this as my very first backcountry meal and found it to be the best one I selected. Best when it is a little cold and windy outside! Very warming, just spicy enough, and very filling. YUMMY

Pretty Good

For a dehydrated take on cajun food this was pretty good, complete with dehydrated okra.
