Really stylish but not for intense hikes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 5"
    Weight: 130 lbs

The minute I opened the box, I loved these boots. Super comfy and very stylish (because that also matters to me). The first couple of shorter hikes with a light or no pack were fine and no break in period needed.
Unfortunately, the more use they get and on longer, steeper, rocky terrain...they just are not the best choice at all. My feet are tired after 12 miles and there is just not enough support or cushioning for a duration like that. I couldn't imagine wearing them with a heavy pack. It's to the point that I just wear my Montrail Masochists for these longer day hikes instead to keep my feet happy. In addition, these have horrible grip on rocks and can't trust that my foot won't slip because it has many times, which puzzles me with the Vibram sole and all. If you happen to come across a snowfield on a hike that wouldn't require you wearing mountaineering boots, this has absolutely no grip whatsoever....like in a very scary way.

With that being said, for light day hikes and low mileage - these are nice. If you log more miles in variable terrain then I would just suggest getting a different pair that is geared more for that pursuit. Suffice it to say, I am shopping for a new hiking boot.

Great for day hikes.

Definitely comfortable. Didn't need to break them in. Fit comfortably with a midweight sock. Only have worn them in Northeast - fall and early spring so I can't vouch for how breathable they'd be in higher temps but for the conditions that I wore them in, they worked out well. Got Austral Aura, love the color. Did some rock scrambling and walked along the wet rocks of stream and the grip was good.

Great for day hikes.

Fit great and love these boots

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These boots had a great fit as soon as I put them on. I was a bit hesitant about ordering hiking boots online but these have worked out without any problems. I had done some hiking with a different brand of boots bought from another company and had ended up with blisters on my ankles...won't do that again. But, my Ahnu Montara Boots are so comfortable, I'm really glad that I ordered these.

seems well constructed, didn't fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

I have pretty wide feet, and I read some reviews stating that this boot had a narrow heel and a wide toe box. I usually wear a 7 or 7.5 so I ordered a 7.5 thinking the extra space would compensate for any width issues. I had a fair amount of room at the end of my toes, but absolutely none on the sides. My toes were squished immediately and I knew breaking them in wasn't an option. My heel was just fine though (I think I have normal width heels?) A 7 Wide would be a good fit. An 8 would have been way too long and possibly not wide enough still. I was so excited these are great looking boots with great reviews. BEWARE you wide footed people, my foot is approximately 4 inches wide at its widest point and there was NO WAY my feet were fitting in there without overlapped toes. True to size in length almost perfectly though.

Magnificent Montara 's

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

These Montara's are everything a hiking boot should be and then some. Comfortable from the get-go, these awesome boots provide ample breathability, great ankle support, a narrow profile, and are extremely well-made.

While excellent for long backpacking trips, these sweet duds also come in some beautiful colors making them great for wearing around town. I picked out the Astral Aura, and they are gorgeous. I typically wear size 7 in women's, and found these fit true to size. I highly recommend, feel free to contact me on our Live Chat service here on the site (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), or leave me a comment here if you've got any questions about these fantastic boots.

I've heard these boots may not be great for long hiking trips with a heavy backpack as they do not offer much support. Do you agree with this?

Hi there,

I have taken a few weekend backpacking trips now with my 65 L pack (which is usually very heavy as I tend to over pack), though as it?s still early spring here I haven?t tried them on a weeklong excursion yet. That being said, I haven't had any trouble so far with my Montara's in that capacity, and found that they have pretty awesome ankle support which for me is pretty important as I'm still recovering from an ankle injury.

I hope that helps!

Cheers,
Cory

My feet are wrapped in clouds

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

The best possible hiking investment ever. We do typically 4/5 hour day hikes in the Adirondacks. Terrain uneven. rocky with lots of elevation to come down afterwards. My toes don't jamb. I typically wear a 7.5 but bought an 8 to account for thicker socks and I love these boots so much that I don't take them off all winter. My polar loop reads about 2500/3000 steps a day without hiking and my feet are never tired. I will buy another pair before they change the model. Maybe a few more. Best gift to myself

best boot ever

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I love these boots. I have a low volume foot, so finding a good pair that fits can be difficult. I love how light the shoe is, how snug it is and easily adjusted they are. They were super easy to break in. Though I bought them mainly for hiking and backpacking, I wear them almost every day now. They give me great support whether i'm standing at an easel all day or belaying kids for hours. Also, theyre snug enough that I can work some routes and problems in them on those days when its really too cold for climbing shoes. Love. These. Boots.

comfortable enough to sleep in

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These boots are terrific. Fits true to size although my orthotic shoe inserts also fit inside and the boot is still comfortable. Best part (and the reason I purchased this boot) is the sole. Absolutely amazing tread - I haven't slipped even once on ice or snow. No negatives. Just wish I could wear them 24/7..

Comfy Right Out of the Box

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

These boots are comfy great right out of the box. They are very light. I was nervous about not going Goretex, but so far they have been perfectly waterproof. I have been wearing them non-stop for about two months, and they are starting to wear already. If you are doing rugged off-trail hiking often, they are probably not durable enough. If you are pounding the trails they will probably be fine. I have a narrow heel and like a roomy toe box, and they deliver.

My mom loves these!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got these boots for my mom for Christmas and she absolutely loves them! This is what she had to say:
"I love them! I did go up 1/2 size (7 to 7-1/2) and they fit wonderfully with a smart wool medium thickness sock. (my normal size 7 is with tights or thin socks). As other comments, they didn't require breaking in - comfortable from the start. Very light and have great traction on steep terrain and on side slopes. And, although uncertain at first, I love the color - coordinates with everything and is much more fun than brown, grey or blue!"

I tried these on recently and am hoping...

I tried these on recently and am hoping to hear if anyone has any thoughts on the ankle support? I do long backpacks often to locations that require heavy gear and/or I'm alone carrying all of my own stuff. Will this boot hold up on rocky terrain for ankle support? How about waterproofing for damp rainforest settings? Thank you.

Responded on

I have these and am very happy with them for 10-15 mile day hikes and have used them for winter snowshoeing, too. They are light, waterproof, comfortable and durable. I do think that for longer hikes they are perhaps too light - they have support similar to a trail running shoe rather than a heavy hiking boot.

Sold On Both Boot and Company

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bought this boot for hiking on rocky terrain through TX, ranging between six to 12 miles at a time. Found many good reviews online for this specific model. Desired to have shoes with good grip and water resistance, and these boots claimed so. Believe the boots are true to size and as others say, there is no breaking in required. I didn't size up 1/2 and felt that was okay with the fit, even with very thick winter hiking socks. My feet were comfortable (padding wise) and my toes weren't squished. On wet terrain my feet stayed dry. BUT after a few months the toe protector on one shoe slightly peeled back. These shoes have a one year warranty, but I chose to stick them out since the damage was slight. Around month seven I took them on a very muddy 12 mile hike. When the shoes dried I noticed the toe protector was significantly peeled back. I mailed the shoes in to Ahnu for an evaluation. I'm convinced it was an uncommon manufacturing defect. I was told it could take three weeks for the evaluation, but I received brand new replacement boots in two weeks. I'm pleased with the warranty and happy to give this new pair a test run.

comfortable and lightweight

I love these boots mainly because they are so lightweight, unlike other hiking boots I have had. I've worn them in subzero temperatures (with the appropriate socks) and my feet stayed warm too. No break-in required either!

I am hiking 1000 km on La Via de la Plata (One of the Camino de Santiago routes) my pack will be under 20 pounds and it will be a 2 month walk, some hiking, mostly an old roman road. (Very different from my usual backpacking!) Love the feel of this boot- thoughts on durability?

Does anyone know if this boot runs true...

Does anyone know if this boot runs true to size, Large or small???

Hey M,

Thanks for the question. When it comes to the fit of the Ahnu Montara Waterproof Boot - Women's, the length is true to size, the forefoot width is a bit on the wide side and the heel is true to slightly narrow. The material will stretch a bit over time as well.

Responded on

I felt it ran about a half size small, narrow heel (hooray!) and a wide, but not too wide forefoot.
