If you've got some basic first aid training, this is the kit I would recommend. I haven't had to use it yet, and hope that I never will, but it's in my pack on every outing. One of the great things about this kit is that there's a little bit of extra space so you can beef it up however you need. If you're hiking in the winter you can fit some emergency blankets for hypothermia in there or whatever else you might need for any situations. Great kit for the money.

This kit has everything you need, but if you're paranoid like me and want to add more (Band Aids, neosporin, etc.), the pouch isn't stuffed so you can fit more in. Very light weight and the few times I've had to dip into it, everything has been dry and good to go.

The boyscout motto "be prepared" often gets the better of me and I can really overdue things like first aid. (As a fairly accident prone guy, I have a gauze factory under my bathroom sink, and enough hydrogen peroxide to put a hospital to shame) This being said, I chose this kit for backpacking and climbing due to its convenient size. This basically enforced a limitation on how much crap I can bring. The kit really does cover all the basics that I remember from scouts, plus a little book that has more than you would ever need to know about anything. And like most everyone else has stated, there is enough room that I can squeeze in a few extra pills and another small roll of gauze ;-)

I was surprised at just how little space this kit takes up and how light it is. I am planning to add some kid-specific items for overnight hikes with my boys. The reflective piping around the edges is a plus in case it gets mislaid in camp.

Thankfully I have not had to use this very much or for any major accidents but from my uses with it and being familiar with what is needed this covers all the bases. Not recommended for a big trip, but for your casual day hikes or climbing trips this is great. Packs very small and weighs very little, well worth the space and weight.
