How gnarly is your approach?
Sometimes the climb is nearby, and sometimes it's faraway with muddy, rugged trails in between; the Adidas Men's Terrex Scope High GTX Approach Shoe serves the latter. Gore-Tex Performance Comfort membrane offers waterproof, breathable protection in case you step into a puddle, and the high-cut neoprene collar offers extra ankle support and protection.
For comfort, Adidas added an Ortholite sockliner for long-term cushioning, high levels of breathability, moisture managing properties, and antimicrobial odor-resistance. The Adiprene midsole absorbs shock and adds support for the long haul, and the sole features the same Five Ten sticky Stealth rubber that you can find on the bottom of your climbing shoe.

If someone said that there was a shoe that was so comfortable that you could put them on out of the box and hike 27 miles in them over rough, rugged terrain, would you believe them? There aren't many shoes like that and granted, everyone has different feet, but I can say that the Terrex Scope are a pair that meets that description. They are extremely comfortable, yet not too bulky and stiff to hinder movement or feel like you are walking around in a pair of double plastic mountaineering boots. The stealth rubber sole gives ample traction on a wide range of terrain, whether it be crossing a boulder field, traversing a steep exposed and wet ridge line, or simply hiking down the trail. The gore tex keeps your feet dry and the new gore tex performance comfort keeps your feet dry from the elements AND allows the perspiration to breathe from your feet. This eliminates the wet soggy feeling that older gore tex shoes had. The older technology did a great job at keeping your feet dry, but the moisture from the sweat of your feet made them feel wet regardless. The stealth rubber holds an amazing grip and the sole is designed to provide support for smearing and edging in the toe area.
I took these shoes from the box without trying them on, to Grand Teton. It was about 27 miles round trip and these performed flawlessly without causing any irritation or hot spots whatsoever. I thought it was a fluke so I once again took them on a brutal hike in the Wasatch range. 15 miles and 15k of vertical later, the same thing. No hot spots, no irritation, the perfect amount of support traveling across all types of terrain, and pulling low to mid 5th class exposed moves with them.
These shoes have met and exceeded my expectations, I have them in both the high and the low model, and clients have been impressed that they have bought them as well. Definitely don't hesitate to give these shoes a try. Great so far!
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: Runs large
- Size Bought: 9.5
I got these for basic hiking and backpacking. I've been on a handful of hikes with these (5), a few of which were fairly technical, going through slot canyons, up and around boulders and red rock and walking through water. They have been great! I haven't had any problems with my feet getting wet and the ankle support should be nice for future backpacking trips.
I did have to buy a 1/2 size down. Adidas is a sister company with 5.10 so it uses the great Stealth Rubber technology for extra grip and you can tell the difference. I'll update after a few more trips!
does this shoe have a shank?
This does not have a shank. The Midsole is AdiPRENE which is a highly shock absorbent and durable foam material, but there is no shank.
What is the height difference between the mid and this boot?
