When hiking, I much prefer a shoe to a boot, and these do the job great. Good traction, comfy, and the quick-lace system is great.
They are a versatile enough shoe that they can be worn off the trail and don't feel overly clunky and out of place. Also work great when I've decided to use them on one of my flat-pedaled bikes.

Forgot my climbing shoes, my Terrex Fast X's worked in a pinch.

Great shoe, does it all. GTX vs non-GTX

This shoe can do it all. I was a little nervous because Adidas was new to the outdoor market, but I figured if they can make running shoes, they can make a decent hiking shoe. And for the first time since being married, I was actually RIGHT! Really good traction, love the quick lace too.

These shoes can be used for a lot of activities as well, one of the best "do-it-all" types of shoe. Tread like a trail runner, but they also have the heel pad for carrying loads while backpacking. One time I forgot my rock climbing shoes, so I used these in a pinch and they worked fairly well because of the stiffer front toebox. And if you get the right color, you could pull these off with jeans while kibitzing around town.

One quick word of advice if you're questioning if you should get the GTX (Gore-Tex) version: If you plan on trail running through wet grass, go GTX. But if it's 90% dry all the time with the occasional shoe dunk in a stream, skip the GTX. I've owned both, and the non-GTX will dry out much faster (since water can drain out, and doesn't have to be in a gaseous form to squeeze through the Gore-Tex).

Great shoes

I was totally blown away by these shoes. I ran an uphill race on Aspen mountain ski resort in them last night and was really impressed. Steep climbing on packed snow with nothing but these shoes and burly soles and i didnt slip at all!

Are these water proof?

Are these water proof?

No, the upper mesh liner will let water pass in and out pretty easy. These will be super breathable and moisture from sweat will pass right through these shoes.

Hmmm. The Fast R GTX mid is Gore-Tex and waterproof, but this shoe appears not to be, which seems very strange.

What is weird is that the shoe says "Gore-Tex" right on the side. I think it is Gore-Tex, like the mid. The descriptions of both the mid and this shoe both fail totally to mention the pretty significant detail. From what I understand it is largely the reason for the premium price over the Terrex X.
