    Oval is the new round.

While we can't verify any particular company's claims of having the best oval shape to optimize pedal stroke, it's always good to have options. Enter the Absolute Black Race Face Oval Cinch Direct Mount Traction Chainring. Claiming improved rear wheel traction as a result of more consistent power throughout the pedal stroke, Absolute Black manufactures each chainring size with its own patented oval profiles for smooth rotation. Made to pair with the Race Face CINCH system, this chainring mounts directly onto the crank and comes in a variety of colors to add some flair to your drivetrain.

    Consistent Power

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am running this ring on my rigid single speed and aside from the setup being a little different than what I am used to, it works really well.

On my first ride, I noticed an obvious variance in my pedal stroke and feedback, but by about an hour into the ride I seem to have adapted to it and I no longer noticed any irregularity. I did notice an improvement in the way I was delivering power to the rear wheel. More consistent power throughout the pedal stroke, it seemed like I was able to get through the dead spot, or weaker point in the stroke more quickly, allowing me to stay in the power. I also noticed better traction, likely as a result of the more consistent power to the rear wheel.

Setting it up, since it is an oval ring on a single speed with no chain tensioner it took a little extra attention. Initially I had just a little too much chain tension and had noticeable resistance at one part of the stroke where the most tension was on the chain. By backing off of the tension just a little the problem was solved.

I would recommend this chainring, it is worth a try and if you need to replace your ring, why not. I will continue running it, and when it eventually wears out, I will buy another Absolute Black oval ring.

    Great Upgrade for Your Bike

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I really like the elliptical ring. I think my pedal stroke feels smoother and I can last a little longer before having to gear down. I am not noticing a huge advantage, but definitely no disadvantage. If you are in the market for a new ring, go for it!

    1x + elliptical ring = sweetness

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've logged over 5,000 singletrack miles the last few seasons using an elliptical ring and have yet to drop a chain. I'm a huge fan of the rings in this application, but admittedly most of those miles have been on a Rotor setup - crank & ring combo. It was flawless.

So when I recently got a new whip, and my Rotor crank wouldn't fit, I was pretty bummed, and had to look for a new solution. Absolute Black nailed it, and after a couple hundred miles, I'm all smiles, and likewise have yet to drop a chain.

In all fairness, the pedaling has slightly more feedback on this ring than I had experienced with the Rotor -- it's not enough of an issue to reconsider my build, but worth mentioning.

Will this work on a bike with a boost axle?
