Description

Rise above the slide with an airbag backpack that improves your chances of survival.

A vast majority of avalanches are triggered by humans and within a single second, an entire slope face can be in motion. The ABS Vario 30 Backpack includes an ABS airbag system that can mean the difference between ending up underneath a pile of avalanche debris and staying on top of it. After a quick pull of the pyrotechnic-pneumatic handle, the ABS system quickly inflates a pair of air bladders from the side of this pack. These air bladders give you 170 liters of additional volume which improves your ability to rise to the top of a moving debris field by taking advantage of a phenomenon of physics known as inverse segregation (simply: in a collection of moving particles, the largest particles move to the top, like the largest nuts in a bowl of mixed nuts). Compared to other airbag systems, ABS's system provides two major benefits: the redundancy of dual air bladders and the horizontal glide position encouraged by the use of two side-oriented air bladders. As a result of this horizontal position, your feet, legs, and torso end up closer to the surface, which makes it easier to self-rescue or for others to spot you.

Besides the airbag system, this pack offers storage for your avalanche safety gear, helmet, and other essentials, ski and snowboard carry options, and hydration-bladder compatibility. The carry system is dialed and adjustable, and you get the added security of a metal buckle at the waist and a leg loop attached to the base. Zip on or zip off other Vario storage options to customize this pack to your liking. ABS went to great lengths to make the airbag unit foolproof and reliable, the pack comfortable, and the feature set rich and useful. Improve your chances of surviving when disaster strikes and carry all the gear you need in the process.

  • Includes a 30-liter backpack that zips onto the included base unit (base unit houses the air bladders and activation unit)
  • Dual airbag system displaces a combined 170 liters of volume to give you dynamic lift that helps you rise to the surface of slide
  • Two air bladders provide redundancy in the event that you should strike something that causes one of the air bladders to burst
  • Air bladders are constructed from polyurethane material that's extremely durable and capable of withstanding extreme abrasion and weight
  • Easy-to-use, single-use, pyrotechnic-pneumatic trigger offers near-instantaneous activation of the airbag unit
  • Trigger can be moved to the left or right side to accommodate your dominate hand
  • ABS system utilizes a single-use, compressed-nitrogen cylinder as propellant to inflate the air bladders
  • Trigger and cylinder must be replaced after every use and can't be recharged or refilled
  • Sternum strap is height adjustable for comfort, and this pack includes a leg strap that provides further security to ensure that this pack stays on you in the face of the massive forces of an avalanche
  • Interlocking, steel D-ring waist buckle provides the highest level of security and resistance to forces that try to tear this pack off your back
  • Vertical or diagonal ski carry and vertical snowboard carry options keep your gear out of the way when you're hiking or boot packing
  • Dedicated internal compartment keeps your shovel and probe in an easy-to-reach location so your safety gear is close
  • Detachable, external helmet holder makes more space in the interior
  • Hydration-compatible internal sleeve holds your hydration bladder so you don't have to lug a water bottle around
  • Main compartment flap includes a tag with international emergency contacts and SOS information
  • Editor’s Note: wearing this airbag system does NOT guarantee that you will survive an avalanche burial or a slide amidst avalanche debris; get educated, get the right tools, travel with partners, and be smart out there
  • Nitrogen-based cylinders ship full and thus ABS airbag systems can only ship via ground methods in order to conform with ORM-D shipping restrictions

Does this system come with a full canister or does it not. If not, where do I get one and how do I transport it when I travel by plane?
