Description

Vastly improve your odds of survival.

Beacons may help you get found in case of a slide, but your best bet for surviving it is to not get buried at all. The Vario 15 Backpack by ABS Avalanche Rescue Devices is a backcountry-ready pack that features airbags that will inflate to help keep you at the surface of an avalanche. Not only are you more likely to save yourself, but you're able to get to work helping others sooner. Even if you do end up partially buried in snow, the bags are almost always visible on the surface for quick rescue.
  • Includes a 15-liter backpack that zips onto the included base unit, where the airbags and activation unit live
  • Dual airbag system displaces a combined 170 liters of space to push you to the surface of a slide
  • Easy-to-use pneumatic trigger quickly and reliably inflates bags
  • Canister(included)loaded with compressed nitrogen for performance at low temperatures
  • Height-adjustable sternum strap and leg strap ensure the pack stays on under stress
  • Dedicated compartment holds shovel and probe so you can help out the rest of your party
  • Detachable helmet holder makes more space in the interior
  • Hydration-compatible so you can stay on top of your game and not get dehydrated in the high country
  • Ski- and snowboard-carry straps hold your plank(s) on the hike up
  • Editor’s Note: wearing this airbag system does NOT guarantee that you will survive an avalanche burial or a slide amidst avalanche debris; get educated, get the right tools, travel with partners, and be smart out there
  • *The Vario 15 can only be shipped via ground methods in the lower 48 states

Bought the vario 15 after using a bca last season. I like the versatility of the Vario. 15l is perfect for day tours. I carry shovel, probe, snow saw, snow study kit, cornice/rb rope, food/drink and there plenty of room if you want to put your skins in on the down or carry extra layers. Hopefully get to take the 40l attachment on a multi day trip soon. For my build (5'7" 145lb) this pack has been more comfortable compared to the bca.

Pricey but worth it

The ABS web site says the Vario comes in 2 sizes. The models on BC.com don't show size options, except for the "base" models. Could you please clarify what the size is when it isn't specified. Thanks.

Started with the Vario 30 and like it for extended trips, but found it a little bulky for quick side trips. Purchased the Vario 15 and in seconds had it on to my existing frame and it was out the door. Great pack and the weight you do not even notice after a few laps. No problem with carrying my med kit, shovel, probe, water, and a puffy.
