Nice bag but stinky

A quality sleeping bag at a good price. I bought it for car camping, hut-to-hut skiing, couch surfing, and not so cool, humid nights in the tent. Plenty of room to toss and turn, reasonably warm but you would want a good hat below 50 degrees and long johns at 40. Stuffed size is adequately small but not remarkable.
The only problem I had is that it smells like B.O. It came in original packaging, and it was rolled up like it would have been in the factory, but it reeks of mammalian musk. I'm not sure if it's the plastics or fabric treatments used in the construction, or if it was returned by a bonobo ape and cleverly repackaged. LE PEW.

Would this zip together with The North Face Allegheny 40 Sleeping Bag?

Responded on

The Dolomite is not made to be zipped together with another bag but if you happen to have an opposite zip bag then in theory I believe that the two would mate.

Great for crashing couches and summer

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this bag about 3 weeks ago. I crash on couches occasionally and thought why not get it for that reason and summer camping.

This bag is super light, compresses very well, and the nylon feels like silk. I usually unzip it and use it as a generous blanket. The design offers plenty of room and comfort. The watch pocket is also a pretty cool feature. There are cinch cords on the top and bottom of the bag.

I cannot wait to use this bag for summer hammock camping, but for now it will settle as an emergency bed for drunken nights. I use the NEMO fillo pillow and I get great sleep.

Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought the sleeping bag for summer camping, to keep me worm at 40 degree according to synthetic heatkeeper, but the thin layer of the bag and nylon inside was uncomfortable and cold for camping, only savior was the flees sheet that i fortunately bought, was very disappointing since I trust and love the North Face. It is lightweight and easy to carry, but not worm at all.

40 degrees is the lowest temperature at which a person could expect to be comfortable but while working in an outdoor shop we referred to that as the "survivability rating". Almost no one I have met is comfortable at the lowest temperature a bag is rated for. As a general rule I bring a bag rated 15-20 degrees below the lowest temperature I expect to encounter. This is true for nearly all sleeping bags until the recent move to European Norm 13537 sleeping bag testing. I cannot find a website that tells me whether or not The North Face also utilizes EN testing but this testing is done by an independent laboratory which applies a rating to the bag and allows you to compare that to other bags which are similarly tested.

From North Faces Website:
Tip: Get a bag 15-20 degrees cooler than what you are using it for if you are a cold sleeper as Mathew.Miller has already stated.

I have read this bag is not warm at it's rated 40 degrees, has anybody had this experience?

Responded on

I use this only for summer camping and crashing over friends houses. I would not trust it with temps below 50.

What is the cleaning instructions?

From the north face website

Q3: How do I wash my down sleeping bag?
Periodic cleaning of down sleeping bags is essential to maintaining maximum loft and ensuring the long life of the product. Though it is possible to wash your own down product, we recommend that you have your jacket or sleeping bag professionally cleaned by a service that specializes in cleaning down. If you do not have a cleaning service in your local area, you may send your product to the Warranty Department, and request that we send it to our cleaning service.

This bag is not down, and as such does not require the same care.

Great!!!

It's light weight,
small when folded.
Easy to fold.
feels good inside.
I use it with the Therm-o-rest ridge rest sol. They work good together. (I need a little extra padding to be comfortable)
Overall, I like the product very much.
Just note, it is not build for winter gear. 40 degrees F, is what North Face rates this bag.
Great for sleepovers too (indoor use).
