Is there a place to for trekking poles?

Best Answer Responded on

I think most folks would cinch the poles inside the compression straps on the side of the bag. That's what I've done with every pack I've ever owned.

I'm around 5 feet and 117lbs-ish with a 16" torso. do you think this bag would be too big for me? i saw that the torso was adjustable so i thought it might be okay, but i wasn't sure.

also, i saw a youth version of this pack (also 55L). do you think that would be an okay fit?

Hey Xi,

This pack is mad to fit a torso length of 14-19 inches so I think you should be set. No need to get the kids pack.

thank you!

Currently I do not show we have any of the in baja blue or are we getting any soon. However I do show we have a vendor order coming in soon for the Grecian Green/Fig Green colorway. We don't have an exact date on that, but could be any day now to a few weeks.

Does this bag fit within carry-on standards?

Responded on

Taylor,
Each airline will make its own standards for carryon size but limits are generall around 22" x 14" x 9". The Terra 55 Dimensions are: 26 x 15 x 7.5 inches. Not outside the realm of possibility, but I would plan on checking this bag in most cases.

What size torso does this fit? Is it adjustable? I'm 5'2" and need a pack that fits a 14" torso. Thanks!

Best Answer Responded on

Hey Jodi,

The Torso is adjustable and is made to fit a 14 - 19 inch torso. So even though you are on the lower end of the scale this should fit you fine.

I'm just getting back into backpacking after 15 yrs out. I'd like to replace my external frame pack. Where do you put/attach your tent or sleeping pad? I'm used to strapping them to the bottom or top of my pack. Am I reading this correctly - can I adjust both the shoulder straps and something in the back to fit me?

Best Answer Responded on

Hello CeJai, thanks for the question!
Glad to hear you are answering the call of the backpack once again : )
For this pack, you can rig up your pad or tent on the exterior of the pack. There are plenty of straps for accommodating this function. If you are heading on a shorter trip, you can also probably fit these items in the bottom of the pack.

You are correct, the shoulder straps are adjustible. The sternem strap on the front can also be moved up and down for perfect placement depending on your bust size. There is an Opti Fit system in the back in which you can adjust the length of the pack to properly fit your torso. You can really customize this pack to dial in the perfect fit for extra comfort! I think you will be amazed at how comfy this pack will be after using an external frame pack!

Hi again CeJai,

I wanted to add a couple of things to Lexi's rundown- You'll see two zippers toward the bottom of the pack. That's where your sleeping bag goes. There's a buttoned nylon separator between that compartment and the main compartment of the pack. My oldest kid used to use the Terra 55 pack, and his share of the tent was either poles and stakes, or the tent shell, etc stored in a compression sack in that main compartment along with his lightweight sleeping pad and bear canister. Plenty of room for his clothes and gear with a little creative packing. The tent can also be carried under the lid, under the side compression straps, or with bungees or nylon straps hooked into those little loops at the bottom of the pack...but he prefers to try to internalize as much of his load as possible for balance and a cleaner profile. As Lexi said, the Opti-Fit is a pretty simple and ingenious system that's really just based on a velcro adjustment. It's easy to dial in quickly and exactly, even in the field. Shoulder straps are adjustable from the top, at the bottom, and at the sternum strap that slides on a wire to adjust the height at the chest.

Internal frame backpacks are typically a bit heavier than external frames, but this is a great all around pack for general purposes that will be a nice change and transition for you. Hope this gave you some added info.

terra 55

Plenty of room depending on the length of your trip, and the size of your equipment. Sleeping bag compartment, also a side zipper allowing you to have access to the stomach of the bag. Unfortunately i haven't had a whole lot of experience using this pack yet, planning to, of course I'll update my review. All the aesthetic features i love, as far as color & texture. Also the hip belt, is toooo big. I'm about 5'7 and 100lbs, hip belts are a problem i run into often though.

Responded on

After an entire season with this pack, it's pretty nice. I have the hip belt so tight that it squeaks a little.
& it does not come with a rain cover.

Not entirely content

I love the color and the feel of the pack, but the description is misleading. As far as exterior pockets it claims to have 2 side mesh, one lid, one front and 2 side pockets, but i do not see any side pockets (besides the one that opens into the whole pack). This pack would be perfect if it just had pockets on the waist strap. I haven't decided if i am going to send it back or not. I want my things to be readily available and organized.

The North Face Terra 55 Backpack works great and looks good too

This is yet another purchase I made for my niece who is recently getting into serious camping mode. I threw this thing on and played around with the sizing but I could tell this is definitely built for a woman's frame. She loves it and it fits her great. She is roughly 5'6" and 120 lbs.

Padding in the hip belt is a big deal to me. I always noticed that in cheaper packs or ones with bad designs once you hit around 5 miles you really start to feel it. This pack has just the right amount of support without it being super huge and bulky. The long zipper down the front is pretty awesome too because Its no fun stuffing all your stuff in a top loader just to pull it all back out cause you need something at the bottom. Straps, zippers and pockets all built well. This is a really good buy.

Write your question here...Does anyone know how this pack would work for an extended hiking/camping trip?

Responded on

it has enough room for multiple day trip depending on what kind of equipment your taking. It has room for sleeping bag, a tent, and other small gear and your clothes but if your in a area where you need to take a bear can or any special equipment (climbing, ski boots...) this might be a little small

Responded on

you would be best of getting a rain cover anyway

My boyfriend has a Terra 65 and mine is great for me because he has all the gear in his already so I don't much need one any bigger. Great first pack! Pretty colors. Got the weimaraner brown/ fossil ivory

How does the size of the sleeping bag compatment compare to similar bags?

Responded on

I would say that the compartment in this bag holds up well in terms of space and quality with most top brand named bags.

Responded on

The sleeping bag compartment is a little small compared to a larger pack like the 65L. But if you can make it fit.

Responded on

It's a bit small. I have a +30 sleeping bag that's a bit tight in there; but you can open the top of the sleeping bag compartment into the rest of the bag which is what I did. A smaller stuff sack would fit my bag into the compartment easy.

Can this bag stand up to the rigors of being checked as cargo on flights? Since it's a bit too large for carry on it will have to be checked but I was wondering if it will be able to withstand the abuse checked luggage takes....

Responded on

Most packs can handle the abuse but it takes it's toll on them. I bought a TNF expedition duffle that is about bulletproof and you can put your backpack inside it and keep your things secure. Just a thought.

im looking for a backpack to take to Europe for a 21 day trip. Is this the right size. I am a woman but should I get another size in the men's section? im totally confused when it comes to this stuff. please help!

Best Answer Responded on

Are you a light packer? Twenty-one days is a long time, so it's hard to say, but my 10 year old daughter just went on a 5 day field trip with her Terra 55, and she was loaded to overflow with not much more than the basics. Try one of the 70 liter women's packs from Osprey. Again, depending on what you plan on carrying, it might give you the extra space you need to get you through.

Adjustable pack

Awesome pack, I love how it allows you to adjust the trunk part and make it more adjusted to you. Plus I have a North Face hydration pack so I can just put the hydration part in there which is awesome
