Here's what others have to say...

is there side/front access, in addition to the top panel?

Responded on

Hey Chanel,

This pack is top loader and also features bottom compartment access. It does not have side/front zipper access to the main compartment. If you have any other questions about this pack or any other gear, please give me a call at 1-800-409-4502 ext 4446 or email at

A little big but very functional

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When I received the pack I was worried that it would be overkill for a daypack and that the torso was too long. I'm 5'0" and while this pack is a little too long for me, it has suited me well on long day hikes and sits comfortably.
It cinches up pretty small for times when I don't necessarily need the full 34 L, but I'm excited to use it for long surveys/collecting samples. There are so many pockets that cameras/tools/rite-in-the-rains are easily accessible.

I have a few questions.
1. So i will be going on research trips with (Hopefully) this pack. I dont need to carry my own cookware and such so i think i dont need as much space. Normal recommendations say I need 50-60L for 2-3 night trips but since I will be not be packing bulky things do you think this would work?

2. its a slim fit. How slim does that mean? Im not stick thin, more athletically built, but very new to buying packs and such. Will it be uncomfortably small?

3. Im 5'8 but have a very short torso. The REI person who measured me told me I need a small, will this "one size" fit?

Hi Nicole,

On paleo research trips, which span anywhere from 2 days to two weeks, I take my 48 liter as a day pack and sometimes I am still wanting for space (keep in mind my pack is usually filled with tools and rock, so the 34 may work well for you as a field pack). On our trips where we will not be coming back to basecamp (backpacking, with or without food), I would not go any smaller than my 65 liter.

This slim fit shouldn't feel weird or too tight, I tried a similar pack on recently and I would say that one size fits most - you should be happy with this fit with an athletic build :)

Thanks Cory! :)
I am doing tree core research with my adviser and some other students. He says not to worry about cookware or research equipment so I went ahead an bought this! I hope it is small enough to fit my short torso though!

Thanks for you help!

great but not for me

the ventilation back would have been awesome. I needed the pack for point counting in the forest and chaparral. I was concerned about the fabric tearing in the chaparral but the number of compartments, female frame, and capacity tempted me to purchase it none the less. The main compartment is only about 30L capacity and is tall and narrow making it harder for my bike grocery runs to fit things in. Despite the female build the torso was still a tad too long ( I am 5' 2" and most of that is legs). The thing that ultimately made me decide on another pack was that when I tilted my head back (as I would either on a bike or birding) my head would hit the top of the back and not allow me to tilt my head as far back as needed. I would love to get a 30L version of this some day.

Great pack

This pack fits me very well (5'4). The pack straps are very comfortable and easily adjustable. All of the divided pockets help me keep things organized. It is very well made and durable. It's big enough for work equipment and my gear for a day of fieldwork outdoors. I would highly recommend this pack.

I have very narrow hips. Gregory packs I've tried on that are the right length for my torso can't get tight enough around my hips. Do you think this pack would be better for that?

Responded on

I'm 5'5" and have small hips compared to my ribcage & bust, and all of the Gregory packs I've tried have felt really bulky and uncomfortable in the belt. I have, however, had great success with Deuter's SL fit.

Does this pack have an internal zip divider...

Does this pack have an internal zip divider that can be unzipped to access the sleeping bag compartment from the main compartment or to make the main compartment larger?

Responded on

Is this an external frame backpack? If I needed something I could theoretically check at the airport, would this work?

Best Answer Responded on

No, this is an internal frame pack. The dimensions are: height 23", width 13", depth 9.8", so it could even be used as a carry on. As a checked bag, as with any pack, you'll want to secure (cinch down) the waist belt and shoulder straps to keep it from getting hung up in their equipment.

unfortunately no, but, a hydration sleeve costs peanuts and is so worth the value!
