How to Choose Kids Gloves & Mittens

How to Choose Kids Gloves & Mittens

Kids of all ages are notoriously oblivious to the weather, so it’s up to you to pick the right mittens or gloves to keep their hands safe. For infants and toddlers, you want something that’s both easy to put on and easy to keep on their hands. For older kids the options are more varied. Regardless of age, it pays to consider both waterproofing technology and insulation for any given glove or mitten.

Infants and Toddlers:

While gloves offer dexterity, mittens are easier for adults to put on little hands. Wrist straps or cinches can help keep the mittens (or gloves) on their hands. Many toddler gloves use an extra long gauntlet for extra coverage and full-length zipper for easy on and easy off.

Look for a glove or mitten with both waterproof and breathable technology. At a minimum, a winter glove should have a waterproof coating on the fabric. The combination of wetness and cold can be devastating for anyone’s hands.

Insulated gloves or mittens help your kid stay comfortable so they can stay outside longer. Synthetic insulation is less affected by wet weather or moisture and it tends to be less expensive than down. Down insulation offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio.
