The original and still the best.

The 686 Men's Authentic Smarty Cargo 3-In-1 Pant offers versatile warmth and weather protection for the entire season, from deep powder days to sunny spring sessions. Proven Smarty design lets you crank up the heat in January or cool off in April, and Infidry-15 fabric shields you from dumping snow, howling winds, and spring slush.

A removable fleece liner pant can be worn with the Smarty on cold days to keep your legs cozy, or you can take it out and just rock the shell for sunny spring sessions. And on top of that, you can remove the shell and just wear the fleece pant while you lounge in the living room after a long pow day. In fact, the liner pant features denim-inspired five-pocket styling so you can wear it out on burrito and beer runs later that night. Infidry 15 waterproofing blocks out blowing snow, but is also breathable to keep you from overheating, and fully taped seams prevent moisture from seeping in throughout the day.

The regular fit allows room to move comfortably, and cargo pockets provide room to stash your stuff. Air-Flo mesh-lined vents dump heat during intense hikes and leg-burning runs, while the PJ jacket-to-pant connection lets you link up to your 686 jacket to block out snow on deep days. Boa-compatible boot gaiters keep snow from getting in your boots when you're in the deep stuff while still allowing you to access the Boa dial for on-the-fly adjustments, and Cordura-reinforced hems prevent your cuffs from getting shredded.

    Really functional and warm

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

These pants of a loose baggy fit. Plenty of pockets and storage. They are tough enough to handle the mountain grind. I spent a lot of time in some pretty bad weather this season. The waterproofing never failed, I'll need to pick up some tech wash next season. I used the sizing chart and it worked out perfectly. I got them a little big but that wasn't an issue with the adjustable waist straps.

    awesome

I own a black pair and a khaki pair as my main skiing and boarding pants. Very comfortable (relaxed fit), warm as a single shell layer and toasty on the lift in single digits with windchill with the liner in. Good venting on warmer days. Tons of pockets to stash snacks and other stuff. Velcro and tie cord combo keep them up well. Minor downsides are the weight and the thigh pocket liner needs to be a bit more rugged (easily torn by keys or other objects). Not really a 3in1 because I can't imagine using the fleece liner on its own.

    686 dropped the ball

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

So this is my SECOND pair of 686 Smarty 3 in 1 pants. This time I got the Duck Pincord in Large. I will back up a bit and say I also bought the Army Texture Smarty Cargos in Large from BC 2 seasons ago, which are my all time favorite snow pants of all time, and I have owned quite a few! I purchased these from Backcountry because BC is second to none with fast shipping and customer service. I wanted a second pair to use at work (I work in Powersports) due to the fact I am out in the snow and wet all the time, and didnt want to ruin my Army Texture 686 pants. That being said, here is my 2 cents.......

I did not see these in person. I only went off the BC site and the 686 site. I thought the Duck Pincord would actually be a soft corduroy fabric. It appeared to be in close up pictures on the 686 site. IT IS NOT. My bad. Although it looks like it from a distance, it is actually smooth material like any snow pant. I was disappointed, but not enough to return them. I specifically got the brown in case I rubbed up against something, or got dirty. The Army Texture IS a soft texture fabric, which is really sturdy. 686 if you are listening, bring back the texture!

Now the bigger downsides. My Army pants have two buttons above the zipper fly, along with velcro to hold it securely. Although the 686 pictures for THESE pants show the velcro, the pair I received DID NOT have it! AND, only one button to secure above the fly. I have to wear a belt to feel like the pants wont fall down. Hmmmmmm.

Although I love 686 added cordura hem reinforcement to the back cuff, the inseam on these pants are shorter than my original ones. Both pants are the same exact size, but these do not hang to the bottom of my boot which I like. And they changed the ghetto slit from the inside of the leg to the outside. I liked it better on the inside.

My last gripe is the inside material on the outer shell. On the original it is a beefy thick material. On these it is a chincy thin ripstop. No biggie, but a difference.

So overall, it seems 686 dropped the ball a bit. New versions of clothing should be an improvement over the previous design. I wonder if they were bought out or switched manufacturing processes and/or facilities.

I will say I do like the design of the 686 Smarty Cargo, they look good, these from a short distance or more. They are very warm. They block snow. And I still have yet to get wet. They do their job. So I like them enough to live with the shortcomings. But 686, if you are listening, bring back the ones from 2 seasons ago!
