VCT Turbo Ski

In 4FRNT's dictionary, 'Turbo' translates to 'mini-rocker'. The VCT Turbo Ski celebrates the fifth year of Vincent Dorion's pro model with an early-rising salute to powder love. De-cambering the midsection and adding tip and tail rocker to the standard VCT has turned it from an all-mountain slayer to a deep-snow-loving, sideways-surfing slasher that still makes turns on the hard stuff.

Bottom Line: Increase the boost.

Mount them at the mid-sole if you're going to ski it every day. If you plan on skiing switch a bunch I'd mount it a couple cm forward of that.

Better than the VCT in freshies

By:
January 2, 2010

The Turbos ski a lot better in the soft, deep snow than the regular VCT. They seem softer, but still rail on the groomers. If you're deciding between these and the regular VCT's, think about how much powder skiing you will do.
If you ski 60% pow and 40% grooms, go for the Turbos. If it's more like 40% pow and 60% grooms, go for the VCT. If you're going to be skiing 50/50 pow and grooms, still, I'd recommend the VCT Turbos. They're just a bit more versatile.

I have a question about mounting the VCT turbo w/ Hammerheads.

I have a question about mounting the VCT turbo w/ Hammerheads. I weigh 175 and I'm 6/2". I've been skiing a slightly shorter skis and I was thinking of getting the 175s. I'll be skiing the backcountry and lift service in S Lake Tahoe... Do you know anyone my size riding this short a ski mounted for tele? I feel like my effective edge is longer so I can go a bit shorter..... Thanks, Michael

Loving every minute

Picked up the VCT Turbo in 182. I have had a chance to ride in a pretty wide array of snow to get a good feeling for them. The zero chamber is great. It allows for me to cruise the groomers without feeling out of control like with some more extreme rockered skis. These skis will absolutely bomb down the hill, they love to bomb! But the zero chamber also allows for this ski to float amazingly in the freshies.
Cons- its just that since its 104 its not the most nimble ski so moguls and tight stuff can be a challenge, but it does plow through anything which is great. Also since it is zero chamber sometimes it will not track straight, but if your on edge your fine.
Bottom line, this is a great ski for cruising around a resort on groomers, then diving into trees or finding pow stashes.

Wont give it 5 stars yet, havent had the chance to get some serious pow runs in yet. Only got knee deep so far.

Hardpack performance is exceptional, especially for a ski this large underfoot. This is a great ski, and in my opinion one of the best choices if you want one ski that can do it all, and do it all well. The regular VCT's might be a tiny bit more stable for you on groomers, but the performance in pow on these is much better, and there is very little difference in how these ski on hardpack. My 08/09 VCT's feel a tiny bit more stable, but I would totally cash them in for the turbos in a heart beat if I could, just due to the pow performance.

I am in a serious debate on two skis. The VCT and the VCT Turbos.

I am in a serious debate on two skis. The VCT and the VCT Turbos. I see the normal VCTs are a little stiffer and also do not have early riser tips on them. I do only 20 days a year out west, mainly side country. I look for good snow like everyone else, but am lucky to find a fresh foot. For that reason, I do a lot of groomers, bumps, in the trees, etc. I want a ski that floats in pow well, but can still rip it on the groomers since a lot of my time is spent there. Any recommendations? Also, I am have been snowboarding for the past 15 years and just looking to get back into skiing. I am an aggressive snowboarder, but skiing will take a little to get back. I don't want a pair that will kill my legs, but also something with enough edge. I am almost 6 foot and 170lbs. Would you go with 175's or 182's?

Since you are just getting back into skiing I would go with the Turbo..they are easier to ski all around than the VCT. The only thing that the VCT really does much better than the turbo is that it is able to charge through hard crud easier than the Turbo.

Go for the Turbo. Even a minimal amount of rocker will increase your performance in soft snow and crud. The early rise will also make your transitions smoother, and lend to a more forgiving feel. You will definitely want to with the 182's. The 175's would be easier to turn, but once you get more comfortable on your skis, you'll want something longer to let you float better, go faster, and stomp bigger drops. The Turbo will not sacrifice anything on the groomers, but will help you ski smoother in chopped snow and fresh powder. I can't say enough how much better rocker is than traditional camber. You'll love them. Enjoy!

Definite Pow Improvement

By:
January 21, 2010

Rode these at Mt. Baker last weekend and they are AWESOME. Perfect everyday ski for somewhere where it snows. The little bit of rocker makes them ski way better in deep snow than my '08/'09 VCT's. The tips on these float super good, and don't dive like my old ones would every once in a while. Groomer performance is stellar. These things ski like a bomber GS ski on groomers, no speed limit, very stable, arc great.

Love the skis, besides the fact backcountry f'd up

By:
February 27, 2010

I love the VCT Turbo: its an all mountain shredder that takes all the punishment i can give it. However, I am very unhappy with backcountry's service this time... I took my skis to a shop, got them mounted with a pair of Marker Dukes for touring, and i get them home to put skins on them and the f****n tail's are bent at different angles (as in one is higher then the other). as a full time college student here in Salt Lake, I wish I had the time to drive the skis over to have them replaced, but that takes a lot of time. This is something backcountry should have caught when the skis were still in the store and before I wasted all my time and effort picking up bent skis (as well as the money I wasted mounting them). needless to say, I am not happy, I just gave a good review because I have skied a non-bent pair and I loved them. I guess my best tip is look for those flaws right when you get them, clearly the folks in the shop don't.

Agree with the below posters, BC has some of the best customer service, hands down. If you're a college student, in SLC, and can't make the drive over to their HQ, just ship them back. I have returned multiple items on BC and I have never had a problem. This is a 4frnt issue, not BC.

If your not happy about the skis, return them. BC has the best return policy of any store I have ever found. If your not happy now, or even in 20 years, return the item for a refund or exchange. Just go get it done if it alters the way the ski handles or performs.
